I began painting in watercolor about ten years ago, seduced and challenged by both its delicacy and power. Although I’m self-taught through reading and experimentation, I have participated in workshops with Don Andrews from whom I learned much about color and values. I'm a member of the Newburyport Art Association, and I've been involved in several figure study groups (Malden, Bradford, Rockport, and Newburyport).
Landscapes are my subject of choice. I enjoy working en plein air whenever possible, savoring the luminosity of the landscape and struggling to capture the light before it (all too quickly) changes. Among my favorites locations for sketching and painting are the Merrimack Valley, the North Shore, and the Atlantic seacoast. Painting favorite places enables me to see them anew. I like to record my travels in watercolor as well, and I’ve painted in England and Nova Scotia and Egypt. During the winter months when working on location is difficult, I focus on figures and still lifes.
Inspiration is everywhere! – especially in the work of John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, Paul W. McCormack, Thomas S. Buechner, and Jeanne Dobie.
In addition to painting, I indulge my passion for dance –Argentine tango, flamenco, and percussive jazz/tap (performing with the ensemble SoleMates).
